The English program at Hull fosters a welcoming, inclusive environment with strong support, driven by world-class research that enhances our postgraduate supervision. Our faculty members specialize in every literary era, spanning from Early Modern works to contemporary 21st-century literature. We are particularly distinguished in medieval literature and medievalism, Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, early modern literary and political studies, 19th-century scholarship (with emphasis on novels and visual arts), modern and contemporary works (especially poetry and fiction), genre fiction (including gothic, crime, and science fiction), and creative writing.
Postgraduate students can choose between two research paths: an MRes in English (with Literature or Creative Writing tracks) or a PhD (in English or Creative Writing). You'll benefit from outstanding resources in the newly renovated Brynmor Jones Library and our Graduate School, with PhD students enjoying exclusive access to the library's Postgraduate Lounge. Our research thrives on interdisciplinary collaboration, supported by networks like the Andrew Marvell Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Alongside the University's Postgraduate Training Scheme, the department provides specialized instruction in research skills and methodologies.
