The empires that have emerged and declined throughout history have permanently reshaped contemporary global culture, leaving lasting impacts on our political systems, socioeconomic structures, physical environments, and belief systems.

While empires are often studied separately, our department combines specialized knowledge spanning from ancient Greek and Roman civilizations to British commercial hubs in China.

We investigate imperial influences on identity formation, looking not just at matters of governance and authority but also at local cultural identities and how urban centers interact with their geographical surroundings.
