The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology employs a globally recognized 'four-field' methodology that integrates archaeology with evolutionary, social, and linguistic anthropology. Our distinctive advantage lies in our holistic methods for examining cultural, biological, and social variations and transformations. We place special emphasis on adaptation, resilience, and globalization processes. Key research areas encompass 'Ecologies', 'Sustainable Futures', 'Transformations and Disruptions', and 'Networks and Methodologies'.
Our investigations cover timelines from ancient prehistory to contemporary society. Field studies are conducted both within the UK and internationally, including locations such as Bhutan, Brazil, China, Colombia, Dominica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, and Venezuela.
The department boasts comprehensive resources for anthropological and archaeological field studies, including excavation capabilities, alongside cutting-edge radiocarbon dating, isotopic analysis, and micro-imaging laboratories. We maintain strong collaborations with national and local professional organizations to enhance student opportunities, partnering with institutions like the Royal Anthropological Institute Ethnographic Film Festival, UNESCO City of Film, and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.
Furthermore, we leverage specialized knowledge and facilities from across the university, including the Brigstow Institute, Cabot Institute for the Environment, Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research, and Jean Golding Institute. Collaborative efforts extend to institutes within the Faculties of Social Sciences and Law (such as Migration Mobilities Bristol, the Centre for Environmental Humanities, and the Centre for Health, Humanities and Science) and the Faculty of Science (including the Bristol Isotope Group and Organic Geochemistry Unit).
