Photography and cinema represented groundbreaking mediums in their respective eras, dramatically transforming how people engaged with visual imagery. Our study examines the roles these artistic forms played within distinct historical contexts: America in the mid-1900s, Rome during the 1800s, and Italy in the mid-20th century. Our focus encompasses creators (including photographers, visual artists, and reporters), viewers, and the diverse applications of these mediums - ranging from personal to public, from oppositional to mainstream. Different research avenues investigate the ongoing discussions about whether photography and motion pictures qualified as legitimate art forms.
