Our PhD/MPhil Medical Mycology program allows you to pursue a research project that advances knowledge in Medical Mycology. This field plays a crucial role in infectious disease research, focusing on fungal-related illnesses, including the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, molecular/genomic/proteomic/metabolomic studies, fungal pathogen cell biology, immune responses to fungal infections, genetic susceptibility factors, disease epidemiology, environmental influences on fungal pathogenicity, diagnostic methods, antifungal drug resistance, and new drug development. Manchester offers world-class postgraduate research opportunities across diverse areas. The university is home to the Manchester Fungal Infection Group (MFIG), an internationally recognized hub for fundamental, applied, translational, and clinical fungal research, with strong connections to the NHS Mycology Reference Centre Manchester (MRCM) and the National Aspergillosis Centre (NAC) at University Hospital of South Manchester.

Qualification Requirements

Students need to hold, or be about to obtain, an Upper Second class Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related subject area for entry to a PhD programme. A Lower Second class Honours degree may be considered if applicants also hold a Master's degree with a Merit classification. We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or TOEFL (iBT) 90.
