Gastroenterology research offers outstanding prospects for both laboratory and clinical studies centered on understanding gastrointestinal (GI) tract physiology and the development of GI disorders in humans and animals. With a distinguished legacy, the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology continues to be a globally recognized hub for investigating core aspects of human physiology.
Most laboratory work takes place at the Henry Wellcome Laboratory of Molecular & Cellular Gastroenterology on the University campus. Additionally, we perform clinical studies and trials at the Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospital.
We prioritize translational research: moving breakthroughs from fundamental medical science into clinical practice, bridging the gap between laboratory discoveries and patient care. Our approach encompasses diverse methodologies, from cellular mechanism investigations using cell lines to patient-based research and clinical trials.
