The Hispanic Studies program at Liverpool explores the languages, literatures, cultures, and histories of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. Liverpool stands out among UK universities by offering Basque, Catalan, and Portuguese Studies, enriching our curriculum with greater diversity and intellectual engagement. Spanish and Portuguese are among the world's most widely spoken languages, with Spanish boasting over 400 million speakers and Portuguese over 200 million.
Our approach at the University of Liverpool embraces the pluricultural and multilingual nature of the Luso-Hispanic world. We emphasize the study of Spanish both within and beyond Spain, highlighting the diverse languages and cultures found across Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. This program helps you advance your Spanish language skills—whether starting from scratch or building on A-level knowledge—to reach proficiency (at least C1 on the CEFR scale). You'll also explore various aspects of Hispanic studies, from linguistics and historical-cultural analysis (including literature and film) to practical skills like translation and interpreting. Beyond mastering Spanish in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, you can also study a second Iberian language (Basque, Catalan, or Portuguese) while gaining deep insights into Hispanic studies.
Our lively student community participates in numerous extracurricular activities, such as Iberian and Latin American Week, annual symposia, guest author visits, and more.
