By taking this course, you'll acquire comprehensive knowledge about the cultures, history, politics, and societies of these regions. You'll explore Islam, one of the world's most significant and widespread religions, which holds strategic relevance both globally and within contemporary Britain. The curriculum also covers pressing modern issues in the Middle East and North Africa, examining topics like cultural identity, sexuality, gender, and race. This program allows you to delve into various disciplines, including area studies, humanities (such as religious studies, history, literature, and performance), and social sciences, with options to learn languages like Arabic and Persian.
Your learning will expand through diverse subjects and innovative methodologies, including studying Islamic history and religion from female perspectives, postcolonialism, decoloniality, and Critical Muslim Studies (a field pioneered at the University of Leeds). Alongside core modules on essential themes, you can select from electives like Arab culture, politics, performance, Quranic Studies, and Islamic law.
