Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period lasting up to 12 months. The combined duration of active research and writing-up must not surpass the total registration limit. The dissertation, normally capped at 80,000 words, must present original scholarly contributions and include publishable-quality work. Finally, candidates must successfully defend their thesis in an oral examination (viva voce) to earn their degree.
