Surgical procedures demand exceptional patience, specialized knowledge, and calm professionalism. Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) exemplify these qualities while maintaining the UK's most rigorous patient care standards. These professionals collaborate with surgical teams including nurses, surgeons, and anesthetists throughout the entire surgical journey - from preoperative preparation to postoperative recovery and follow-up. In the operating theater, ODPs operate at the frontline of surgical patient care. Surgical interventions frequently mark critical milestones in patients' recovery journeys, and as an ODP, you'll serve as an essential team member during these pivotal moments. The ODP profession offers profound fulfillment, providing practitioners with a genuine sense of honor. This academic program combines theoretical instruction with practical training, offering the optimal approach for skill and knowledge development. Classroom learning covers core ODP competencies including biomedical sciences, surgical technology, clinical leadership, and legal/ethical considerations in healthcare practice. To ensure comprehensive clinical competence, 65% of the program involves hands-on training at our network of affiliated hospitals across the East Midlands region. These high-quality placement sites offer supportive learning environments with mentorship, instruction, supervision, and evaluation to prepare students for professional practice.
