Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous investigator in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering research on specific biological challenges while joining an extensive research network employing cross-disciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your PhD journey, you'll not only deepen your specialized knowledge but also enhance professional capabilities through structured training programs, seminar participation, and conference engagements.
Aging triggers neurological decline that impairs cognitive functions, diminishes learning capacity, alters memory retention, and modifies personality traits. For some individuals, these transformations stem from genetic factors manifesting prematurely, resulting in significant behavioral deviations from societal expectations. Progressive neurodegeneration causes persistent deterioration of both mental and physical wellbeing. The consequences for affected patients are severe, ultimately proving lethal, with no existing cures or viable treatments available. At Leeds, our research focuses on deciphering the molecular mechanisms underlying disease progression and examining how particular genes and their genetic variations contribute to pathological processes. Our primary objective involves discovering how pharmaceutical interventions targeting these pathways might safeguard neuronal integrity and enhance cognitive performance in patients.
