The Joint PhD in Psychology and Social Neuroscience cultivates independent research capabilities through this structured approach: Year 1
During the first year, each student receives guidance from a dedicated tutor who oversees their academic development. Research topics and methodologies are selected based on student interests, available resources, and institutional priorities at both City and Sapienza. Year 2
The second year focuses on completing literature reviews, defining thesis structure, and conducting primary empirical research and data analysis. Year 3
Final-year students concentrate on concluding research projects, thesis composition, and disseminating findings through academic publications or conference presentations while planning future career steps. MPhil award:
All research candidates begin with MPhil registration. Advancement to PhD status requires successful review assessment. Ongoing progress is evaluated annually, with failure to meet benchmarks potentially resulting in program discontinuation. Duration:
Full-time: 1–3 years
Part-time: 4 years
PhD by prior publication: 1 year
Applicants should demonstrate the following: A track record of high academic achievement, demonstrated by a good undergraduate degree with at least a second class (upper division) pass or equivalent. Good research methodological skills as demonstrated through relevant research experience and/or a good Masters level degree with at least a pass with merit (or equivalent). Excellent communication skills, both written and oral (see also the section on English language Requirements). Excellent planning and time-management skills. 
For students whose first language is not English, the following qualifications will meet the English language requirement for entry to a postgraduate course of study: A first degree from a UK university or from the CNAA; A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA; GCE O-level/GCSE English language or English literature, grade C minimum; Cambridge ESOL CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) at grade C or above; An overall score of 7 in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum of 7.0 in writing. TOEFL iBT in-person and Home Edition: 100 overall with no less than 23 in Listening, 24 in Reading and Writing, 25 in Speaking.
