Our Neuroscience PhD program is dedicated to unraveling the workings of the nervous system. Approximately 50 research teams explore diverse yet interconnected facets of neural function. Our studies examine how individual neurons develop electrical characteristics, the architecture of neural circuits, and how these systems handle sensory input, retain memories, coordinate movement, and enable cognition. Additionally, we explore network malfunctions in conditions like Alzheimer's, blindness, stroke, and schizophrenia, which manifest as memory impairment, language difficulties, vision issues, and delusions. Cutting-edge methodologies including multi-electrode recordings, optogenetics, brain imaging, genetic approaches, and computational modeling - all well-established at Manchester - provide us with robust research capabilities. We employ and synthesize various model organisms ranging from cultured neurons to fruit flies, rodents, and human subjects.
