The PhD program, available in either Psychology or Neuroscience, is a research-focused degree typically completed in 3 years (or 6 years part-time). Students work under the guidance of one or more faculty members from the School, culminating in an 80,000-word thesis and an oral defense (viva). The School of Psychology and Neuroscience provides both PhD and MSc (research) programs. Research areas in these fields generally align with four main themes: cellular and developmental neuroscience, origins of mind, perception/cognition/action, and social/group processes.
Researchers in this group explore neural mechanisms behind diverse behaviors and cognitive functions, such as movement, attention, reward systems, spatial memory, and social learning, along with the impact of early hormone exposure on brain and behavioral development. Their work contributes to understanding various neurological conditions, including motor neuron disease, substance addiction, and Alzheimer's disease.
