First-year graduate students begin their research while also participating in training sessions to strengthen their research abilities and expand their understanding of cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging. Over the three-year program, students attend weekly research seminars at both the York Neuroimaging Centre and the Psychology Department. They may also enroll in relevant final-year undergraduate or MSc courses to deepen their expertise in specific subjects. Additional sessions focus on academic skills such as grant writing, CV preparation, and interview techniques. Each year, students deliver a 15-20 minute presentation on their research project to the department, providing valuable feedback and honing their presentation abilities.
Within 12-18 months of starting their PhD (full-time), students submit written assessments, including a literature review, empirical study, and PhD plan. This evaluation determines whether they continue with PhD studies or transition to an MPhil degree.
While we strongly encourage PhD candidates to complete and submit their final thesis within three years, an additional fourth year is available if needed for writing. The thesis must be submitted no later than four years after enrollment.
