As a postgraduate researcher in the Faculty of Biological Sciences, you'll join a dynamic research community. Our PhD programs provide diverse projects within globally recognized research teams and laboratories, offering access to cutting-edge facilities, comprehensive training, and support systems to launch your research career successfully. Pursuing a research degree here allows you to cultivate expertise as an independent scholar in your selected discipline. Guided by your primary supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering investigations into specific biological challenges while integrating into a collaborative research network that employs interdisciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your doctoral studies, you'll not only enhance your specialized research capabilities but also acquire valuable skills through structured training initiatives and participation in academic seminars and conferences.
Employing advanced methodologies spanning structural biology, electron microscopy, live cell imaging, and proteomics, along with studies involving human tissue models and in vivo research, SMCB teams aim to deepen molecular and cellular comprehension of intricate pathogen-host relationships. Current investigations explore how tumor-causing viruses (including Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus, adenoviruses, and human papillomaviruses) alter host cells, examine the progression and persistence of chronic viral infections like hepatitis C, analyze inflammatory responses triggered by fungal and bacterial pathogens, and study respiratory disease mechanisms to advance vaccine development. Collectively, this research enhances our mechanistic knowledge of host-pathogen dynamics, illuminates fundamental biological processes, and informs the creation of novel therapeutic approaches.
