This program provides ESRC-recognized training in language-focused regional studies, along with advanced instruction in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, specialized area studies coursework, and language learning in one of the region's tongues.
Designed for individuals aiming for research-oriented careers in the area, the program accommodates both PhD candidates and those seeking non-doctoral paths. Yearly scholarships support students in language-based regional studies tracks through 23 (intensive MRes language training leading to advanced PhD), 13 (MRes or intensive language training for PhD preparation), and 3 (PhD-only) program structures, tailored to applicants' previous academic background.
Our University Library boasts one of the world's finest collections on Russian, Central, and Eastern European studies. We maintain vibrant academic partnerships with thirteen international institutions across eleven countries, hosting visiting scholars who deliver specialized masterclasses and participate in seminars. Alumni have successfully built academic careers as university lecturers and researchers across the UK, Norway, Greece, Italy, and Poland, while others have entered secondary education. Many graduates also contribute to policy research and development within government agencies, corporations, and global institutions.
