With guidance from experienced supervisors, you'll create a significant independent research work that contributes original insights to the field and serves as excellent preparation for doctoral studies.
This MRes program, along with the Latin American Studies MRes and Film Studies MRes, offers a tailored introduction to postgraduate research. It helps you grow into an autonomous researcher while developing an original project under the mentorship of modern languages and cultures specialists.

Specialization options include Basque studies, Catalan studies, Chinese studies, French studies, German studies, Hispanic studies, Italian studies, Portuguese studies, sociolinguistics, Spanish studies, and translation studies. Your degree title will correspond to your chosen specialization.

Regardless of your specialization, this program delivers intensive training for PhD research and professional advancement. We'll support you through the entire research process while developing transferable skills such as analytical reasoning, project coordination, effective communication, and creative problem-solving.
Methodology training will be customized for modern languages and cultural studies, as well as your specific research focus, with comprehensive coverage of current scholarship in your chosen area. You'll collaborate in creating a personalized reading list and assessment components to prepare for your major research project.
Under the supervision of active researchers from the Department of Languages, Culture and Film, you'll learn to formulate research proposals, locate relevant sources and evidence, conduct systematic investigations, and effectively present your findings.
