SOAS is globally recognized for its outstanding contributions to South Asian studies, driven by cutting-edge research. The South Asia Section within the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics invites PhD applications covering any subject aligned with the research expertise of its faculty. Applicants should review faculty research specializations and tailor their proposals accordingly. Current research areas encompass, but are not limited to: Indian cinema and media studies, diaspora research, postcolonial literature, Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Sanskrit literary studies, classical Hinduism, gender studies, translation theory, contemporary Muslim representations, and the political landscapes of Nepal, Bhutan, and Pakistan.
Interdisciplinary projects may be supported through collaborative supervision with other departments. The Department's REF 2014 submissions featured groundbreaking publications, including influential monographs, edited volumes, and journal articles spanning literature, film, cultural history, and postcolonial theory.
All candidates initially enroll as MPhil students in their first year. Full-time students upgrade to PhD status after their first academic year (part-time students after their second). Each MPhil/PhD candidate receives guidance from a three-member supervisory team, consisting of a primary supervisor (60% commitment), secondary supervisor (25%), and tertiary supervisor (15%). First-year students typically meet with their primary supervisor biweekly for minimum one-hour sessions.
