The Japan and Korea Department offers guidance for MPhil and PhD candidates pursuing research-based degrees across diverse cultural and linguistic fields. Prospective students need not restrict their topic selection to those listed under current faculty specialties (recent postgraduate projects have explored areas such as Japanese film studies, Kabuki theater scripts, contemporary Japanese language and literature, Meiji-era historical documents, Korean language studies, and Korea's colonial and 18th-century history). MPhil and PhD research utilizes literary sources, archival records from SOAS collections, and materials obtained through fieldwork in Japan and Korea.
