Latin focuses on mastering the Latin language, exploring its literature, and understanding Roman culture. As part of your studies, you'll have the chance to visit Italian archaeological sites and museums. Your starting level depends on prior experience—beginners or those with some Latin knowledge join level 1, while students with strong Higher or A-level results may begin at level 2.
The curriculum builds a solid grammatical and vocabulary base, progressing to interpreting authentic Latin texts. You'll develop skills to read basic Latin works and translate them into English while expanding your linguistic knowledge to handle literary translations. The program includes studying diverse authors, examining literary and historical contexts, and refining analytical abilities to craft well-supported essays. Honors students can spend three weeks (typically after third year) exploring Italian historical sites, with financial aid available for Single Honors participants.
Recent graduates have pursued careers in education, government, administration, library sciences, archival work, and museum curation.
