Studying German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches covering everything from 18th-century traditions to modern cultural studies. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented courses, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German knowledge - students with SQA Higher or A-level qualifications (grades A/B) enroll in non-beginner language and culture classes, while those with limited experience can take intensive beginner courses covering fundamental reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year for the second language.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths including: media, arts administration, education, civil service, finance, business management, PR,
and diplomacy.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills gained through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our school provides unique global perspectives.
