German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural heritage. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches covering everything from 18th-century studies to modern cultural topics. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented coursework, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in our level-1 intermediate language and culture classes. Beginners or those with minimal experience can join our intensive level-1 foundation course, developing essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse in their second language's culture.
Language graduates pursue diverse career paths such as: media, arts administration, education, civil service fast track, finance, business management, PR, and diplomatic careers.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills gained through language degrees. A Modern Languages & Cultures degree from our School provides unique global perspectives.
