The BA English program offers adaptable options to blend literature and language studies according to your preferences, with creative writing electives available in the second and third years. Language courses explore how social, historical, and psychological influences shape everyday English usage, while literature classes develop analytical skills applicable across various genres and eras. You can customize your path by equally balancing both disciplines or focusing primarily on one area through fully elective modules.
The first year establishes foundational skills for advanced literary and linguistic study, covering academic writing, self-directed learning, English language evolution, and textual analysis techniques. You'll examine the historical progression of English literature alongside language transformations.
During subsequent years, you'll chart your own academic journey. The second year concentrates on pivotal literary eras and essential language concepts, with modules exploring specific periods (like medieval, Victorian, or modernist) and linguistic topics such as childhood language development or psycholinguistics.
Final year studies emphasize specialized literary genres and language's societal/legal contexts. You'll hone research capabilities - potentially through a self-designed dissertation - and may opt for professional experience via work placements with degree-relevant organizations.
All annual coursework consists of optional modules (totaling 120 credits yearly), allowing complete personalization of your academic path.
Creative Writing options become available in the program's latter two years.
