Archaeology explores how ancient civilizations engaged with their environment by examining artifacts, historical sites, and geographical contexts.
Students can acquire hands-on excavation experience both locally and internationally. Previous
participants have joined digs throughout Europe and the Middle East, spanning locations like the Baltic region, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, and Portugal.
The curriculum prioritizes real-world heritage experience,
covering both fieldwork methods and archaeology's societal contributions. Students enjoy
both day trips and overnight excursions to historical sites, natural landmarks, museums, and other cultural institutions.
Participants may join ongoing faculty research initiatives involving site surveys, excavations, archival studies, and collection-based work, while also securing internships at heritage and museum partners through our professional network. We additionally assist students in finding excavation opportunities throughout Europe.
Various industries, including finance, legal, corporate, and hospitality sectors, appreciate the adaptable competencies developed through archaeology studies, such as collaboration, hands-on troubleshooting, and analytical thinking.
Numerous alumni pursue careers in archaeology and heritage preservation with
public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and cultural entities across Scotland and internationally,
including the National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, Archaeology Scotland, the British Museum, National Museums of Scotland and Glasgow Life, as well as UK-based and international archaeological service providers like GUARD Archaeology Ltd.
