Archaeology explores how ancient civilizations engaged with their environment by examining artifacts, historical sites, structures, and geographical areas.
Students can acquire hands-on excavation experience both in the UK and internationally. Recent
participants have joined digs throughout Europe and the Middle East, spanning locations like the Baltic nations, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, and Portugal.
The curriculum focuses on developing real-world heritage skills,
such as archaeological field methods and promoting archaeology's societal value. We
organize both local and overnight trips to historic locations, natural settings, museums, and other cultural sites.
Students may also contribute to ongoing faculty research initiatives involving site surveys, excavations, archival work, and collection-based studies, while gaining professional experience at heritage institutions through our partner network. We additionally assist students in securing positions on European excavation teams.
Employers across diverse sectors—including finance, legal, corporate, and hospitality—appreciate the adaptable competencies developed through archaeology studies, such as collaboration, hands-on troubleshooting, and analytical thinking.
Numerous alumni pursue careers in archaeology and heritage preservation with
public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and cultural agencies in Scotland and internationally,
such as the National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland, Archaeology Scotland, the British Museum, National Museums of Scotland and Glasgow Life, as well as private archaeological service firms operating globally like GUARD Archaeology Ltd.
