Faculty in Modern Languages explore diverse research areas spanning literature, linguistics, translation studies, and film. We guide PhD candidates investigating topics from medieval to contemporary periods across our seven primary languages, often collaborating with other College of Humanities departments for interdisciplinary projects. The University of Exeter's Translation Studies program emphasizes both practical applications and theoretical exploration. Our scholars work as professional translators across disciplines including social sciences, philosophy, academic writing, theater, and poetry, working with Catalan, Chinese, English, French, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, while simultaneously advancing innovative research in cultural and historical translation theories. Our work extends beyond professional translation practice to collaborate with the Centre for Translating Cultures in examining translation's fundamental role in knowledge production and transfer throughout history, understanding memory and ideological systems, analyzing global cultural interactions, and exploring translation's creative influence on literature and arts adaptation.
We dedicate ourselves to providing exceptional research supervision to help you achieve your full potential and prepare for a fulfilling professional journey. The program develops transferable research methodology skills valuable both within and beyond academia. Career paths may include academic research and teaching, or with additional qualifications, opportunities in research institutions, policy organizations, and charitable foundations worldwide.
