Pursue your passion for intercultural research in a department ranked 6th nationally in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Our program provides specialized supervision for research degrees across all translation studies disciplines, encompassing historical linguistics and translation research from the 18th century onward. We support projects involving English paired with: French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Serbian, Croatian, and Dutch.

Key research specialties include:

media translation
cultural exchange processes
cross-cultural analysis
translation practices during Enlightenment and Romantic periods
translation theory development
literary and philosophical text translation
East-West translation studies (particularly Chinese contexts)

We actively encourage research proposals in post-colonial studies, transcultural studies, and transnational research frameworks.

Qualification Requirements

2:1 (or international equivalent) We would usually expect you to hold, or be working towards, a masters degree in a relevant subject. Whilst no formal language qualifications are necessary, applicants would normally be expected to have the ability to translate proficiently between two languages, one of which must be English.

IELTS - 7.0 (no less than 6.5 in each element), TOEFL (iBT) - 100 (with a minimum of 20 in speaking and 19 in all other elements)
