Faculty in Modern Languages explore diverse research areas spanning literature, linguistics, translation studies, and film. We provide PhD supervision for projects covering historical periods from medieval times to contemporary studies across our seven primary languages, often collaborating with other departments in the College of Humanities for interdisciplinary work. Our department maintains strong connections with UK cultural institutions and international research organizations, drawing doctoral candidates from across the globe with varied cultural perspectives. The Portuguese studies team specializes in cultural/literary analysis within Lusophone contexts and Portuguese language research.
We prioritize delivering exceptional research guidance to help students achieve their full potential and prepare for fulfilling professional paths. Our program equips graduates with valuable research methodology skills applicable both within and beyond academia. Career opportunities include academic positions, and with additional training, roles in research institutions, policy organizations, and charitable foundations worldwide.
