The Institute of Irish Studies serves as a premier interdisciplinary hub renowned worldwide for its academic focus on Ireland. Our expertise spans diverse fields including medieval through contemporary Irish history, literary studies, political science, conflict resolution, transitional justice, migration patterns, cultural geography, and gender research. As a globally recognized leader in Irish Studies scholarship, our institute - founded in 1988 - remains unique within Britain, dedicated to serving as the UK's principal multidisciplinary research center examining Ireland and its global connections.

In 2007, the Irish government acknowledged our international prominence through a substantial endowment establishing a professorship in Irish Studies, enabling us to broaden our educational and research initiatives.

Our PhD candidates explore innovative research avenues across Irish Studies disciplines, encompassing literary analysis, historical investigation, political science, conflict transformation, and migration studies. Research periods cover everything from medieval eras to contemporary times, supported by our exceptional Irish library collection featuring rare volumes, political archives, and specialized journals. Students benefit from outstanding opportunities for collaborative supervision when pursuing interdisciplinary subjects.

Prospective students interested in funding options for MRes or PhD programs in Humanities or Social Sciences are encouraged to contact us. We welcome inquiries from applicants seeking support from major funding organizations to join our academic community.
