The University of Essex stands among a select group of research-focused institutions providing a practice-oriented PhD in curatorial studies. Similar to conventional art history doctorates, this program enables in-depth, original investigation into topics within visual culture's expansive realm. However, rather than producing an 80,000-word dissertation, candidates complete their studies by organizing a significant research exhibition accompanied by a 40,000-word supporting thesis.
This doctoral program operates on the principle that exhibitions serve as vital platforms for disseminating research findings - a medium that can be enhanced by scholarly writing, yet achieves unique engagement and communicates ideas impossible through text alone.
Our alumni typically pursue careers in academia, museum curation, gallery work, or other arts-related fields across the UK and internationally. Some graduates hold professorial positions at prestigious institutions like York University and CUNY, while others have curated exhibitions at world-renowned venues including Tate Modern, MoMA New York, and London's Royal Academy of Arts.
