Our five-year BA European Studies with Italian (including foundation year) program is designed to build your subject expertise and enhance your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation in these areas, setting you up for four subsequent years of undergraduate study at Essex.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to finish your degree with our Interdisciplinary Studies Centre.
Turn on the news or glance through any major newspaper, and you're bound to encounter stories about Europe. The continent's future represents a geopolitical issue of immense significance for our world. Yet, many struggle to grasp the complexities of contemporary Europe.
You'll explore Europe's economic, legal, and social frameworks alongside its historical roots while gaining appreciation for its vibrant cultural heritage. European artists, writers, musicians, composers, and filmmakers continue to wield cultural influence that rivals America's global dominance.
In addition to European studies, you'll achieve fluency in Italian. Your fourth year includes immersion in Italian culture through study in Italy. Language shapes our thinking, relationships, and societies - from casual coffee invitations to scientific breakthroughs to resolving international conflicts.
