This four-year dual degree program is offered jointly by our Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of Linguistics and English Language. The program includes a year abroad, providing an exceptional chance to fully immerse yourself in the language and culture. Previous German language experience isn't required, as we provide an intensive beginner's course.
Our German Studies program focuses on helping you achieve complete fluency. Combining Linguistics with German Studies enhances your understanding of language grammar and structure, giving you insights into both English, German, and numerous other global languages.
During your first two years, you'll take a combination of required and elective modules. Examples can be found in the Course Structure section below.
Your third year abroad will allow you to strengthen your intercultural awareness and language proficiency. Options include studying at a partner institution or completing a work placement to apply your language skills in practical settings. Department staff will support you in preparing thoroughly for your year in a German-speaking environment.

A Level AAB
Required Subjects A level German, or if this is to be studied from beginners level, AS grade B or A level grade B in another foreign language, or GCSE grade A in a foreign language. Native German speakers will not be accepted onto this scheme.
IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each component. TOEFL IBT - 87 overall, minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 17 in speaking and 20 in writing. Cambridge English: Advanced CAE 176 overall with at least 162 in each element.
