Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both ancient and contemporary Celtic traditions across Britain and Ireland. Students can immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Celtic-speaking communities while being guided by leading experts in the field, alongside acquiring proficiency in a British Isles Celtic language.
The University maintains vibrant exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and institutions in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths including education at various levels, cultural heritage roles in museums and government agencies, publishing and literary promotion, musical arts, and business ventures. Many graduates continue their academic journey through advanced studies, establishing themselves in research and university teaching.
For those who focused on Celtic Civilisation during their initial years, options include commencing Scottish Gaelic studies or pairing medieval Celtic history with an ancient Celtic language. The curriculum features specialized courses covering distinct elements of Celtic heritage, from early Irish and Scottish belief systems to modern language policies, traditional Gaelic stories, ancient literary works, Welsh medieval writings, and Celtic artistic expressions. Advanced students can select from historical courses examining subjects like medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization. The program culminates with an independent research project, enabling students to investigate a self-selected topic while honing their autonomous research skills.
