The Reid School of Music provides a dynamic research setting that integrates musical theory, history, composition, and performance with acoustic science.
Through composition studies, students can expand their creative expression and boundaries while engaging with modern compositional approaches and innovations. Individual mentorship supports each student's artistic development, embracing all contemporary styles—including experimental techniques and digital tools—without stylistic limitations.
The doctoral program involves three years of full-time study (or six years part-time), with specialized supervision in your selected composition research area. Your final submission will feature a portfolio of original compositions, including at least one substantial, extended piece.
Frequent one-on-one supervisory sessions help maintain focus and direction throughout your research journey.
New researchers typically participate in methodology training at the program's outset.
Annual progress evaluations are mandatory for all enrolled students throughout their studies.
