At the University of York, Music research spans diverse areas. Our experts cover historical, cultural, and critical musicology; composition (both acoustic and electronic); performance (particularly contemporary and historically informed practices); music analysis; music education; music psychology and cognition; artificial intelligence in music; and emerging audio technologies. Numerous initiatives cross disciplinary boundaries, fostering partnerships with researchers outside Music.
These approaches are integrated into our three Research Clusters: the Contemporary Music Research Cluster, the Musical Cultures and Communities Research Cluster, and the Music, Science and Technology Research Cluster.

For the composition pathway, you should have an MA in Composition and be able to evidence a high level of ability and originality in composition
IELTS - 6.0, with no less than 5.5 in each component ,
TOEFL - 79, with a minimum of 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking and 17 in Writing
