Mandarin Chinese ranks as the second most spoken language globally. The cultures linked to it have significantly influenced the modern world across various domains.

Edinburgh stands as Scotland's sole institution providing an undergraduate single honours MA degree in Chinese. Our curriculum offers remarkable flexibility, allowing students to select elective courses from diverse academic fields.

Beyond mainland China, our program examines the importance of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and their global communities through multiple viewpoints.

While our primary focus is teaching beginners, we also welcome students with existing Chinese language experience.

By joining our program, you'll achieve high-level proficiency in modern standard Chinese. You'll acquire practical language skills for both social and professional contexts, with emphasis on:

writing
speaking
listening

As you advance, you'll develop translation capabilities between Chinese and English in both directions.

From day one, we'll provide essential academic and research training to maximize your educational experience, deepening your understanding of Chinese studies and China's regional and global role.
