The Department of German's faculty and postgraduate researchers explore diverse areas within German studies, spanning language and linguistics, literature, history, and cultural studies from the early modern era to contemporary times. Our specialists focus on historical and contemporary sociolinguistics, modern literary forms (including novels, poetry, and theater - particularly from the classical period, the extended 19th century, 20th century, and post-reunification eras), German and Austrian history and politics post-1800 (with emphasis on the political East), children's literature, exile writings, transnational German-language research, and memory studies. We maintain robust collaborations with partner institutions and research centers throughout Germany and Austria.
We invite applications from graduates interested in developing tailored research projects. The School of Modern Languages and broader faculty actively promote and facilitate interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic research initiatives. Our postgraduate community thrives within a nurturing departmental environment that supports both professional growth and personal development.
Students receive opportunities to showcase their research at departmental seminars, school-wide events, and faculty colloquia. We provide comprehensive training in academic skills, including publishing, and may offer undergraduate teaching opportunities after the first year of study.
Specialized research facilities promote cross-disciplinary engagement through regular seminars and events. The Multimedia Center offers specialized language resources, featuring a language lab, media production space, foreign film collection, international periodicals, and a dedicated screening area.
