At Leicester, we invite you to discover the joys of literary study within a vibrant community of dedicated academics and eager students. Our university boasts numerous English societies and groups offering a diverse range of extracurricular and social activities. We organize numerous conferences, talks, and workshops annually, with many open to the wider community. Doctoral candidates undertake an independent research project supervised by an expert team. The maximum enrollment period before thesis submission is 4 years full-time or 7 years part-time. The active research phase (including experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data collection) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period of up to one year. The combined research and writing phases must not exceed the maximum enrollment duration. Theses should generally not surpass 80,000 words and must present original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination (viva voce).
