This four-year program follows the same foundational structure as the BSc Geography degree, with the addition of spending your third year abroad studying geography and related subjects at an affiliated university.
During the first year, you'll gain comprehensive knowledge of both human and physical geography while building essential geographical and scientific competencies. Subsequent years focus on specialized modules in either human or physical geography.
Physical geography components explore three key domains: glacial studies, water systems, and environmental transformations.
Human geography modules offer intensive examination of cultural, economic, and societal geography, highlighting theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches for addressing modern geographical challenges and policies. Subject matter spans from global economic development and political systems to health disparities and current social theories.
You'll acquire proficiency in specialized digital tools, statistical analysis, and field data collection techniques. Language courses will prepare you for your European academic experience.
Fieldwork forms a crucial part of the curriculum, with domestic residential trips in the first year and international field studies typically in the second year.
Your third-year overseas placement will be customized to your needs. Instruction will occur in the host country's language, with current exchange partnerships including institutions in Barcelona, Bonn, Grenoble, Paris, Lyon, Valencia, and other locations. For detailed information about international study opportunities, consult the Centre for Study Abroad.
The competencies developed throughout the program culminate in a final-year independent research dissertation project.
