Whether you're starting from scratch or have some prior knowledge with a Pre-U qualification, our Chinese program helps you master all language abilities to an advanced level while exploring cultural and historical backgrounds. You'll get to experience immersive placements in China, gaining firsthand insight into modern Chinese society. Chester's Chinese program stands out by offering two placement opportunities, enabling you to divide your studies between the UK and China. Your initial placement occurs for six to eight weeks after Year 2, followed by either a semester or full academic year in China. By graduation, you might form lifelong international friendships.

In English Language studies, you'll examine English structures and linguistic theories to analyze both spoken and written communication in various contexts. This encompasses phonetics, semantics, syntax, discourse analysis, language development in children, and linguistic evolution. Diverse assessment methods prepare you with practical skills for post-graduation career prospects. Our faculty specializes in sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, child language development, grammatical systems, critical discourse studies, regional dialects, comparative linguistics, Corpus Linguistics (computer-based text analysis), and Cognitive Stylistics (how readers interpret different types of texts).
