German studies at Aberdeen enjoy an exceptional reputation, recognized for top-quality teaching through flexible, diverse programs spanning language, literature, history, and culture with four or five-year options. Students gain from international study opportunities and numerous subject combinations where a major European language provides significant advantages in today's global environment. The program maintains the highest national teaching quality rating of "Excellent." Learners develop strong German language foundations at all proficiency levels, instructed by native speakers from Germany and Austria, while gaining comprehensive insights into German-speaking cultures.
The curriculum explores social, historical, and cultural dimensions of German-speaking nations, exposing students to artistic expressions through literature, cinema, and visual arts, alongside in-depth examination of Germany's intricate historical landscape. Numerous extracurricular opportunities exist to practice language skills and cultural engagement through German-themed clubs, events, and student theater productions.
This program offers either a 5-year track featuring an integrated year abroad (Mode A) for study or work, or a 4-year option with a semester abroad (Mode B). Both tracks share identical first and second-year coursework, allowing students to defer their choice until second year's December term. We highly encourage applicants to select the Mode A pathway.
