The SOAS Centre for Global Media and Communication offers a dynamic doctoral research program where students explore diverse theoretical and empirical topics related to communication practices across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Our program prioritizes developing critical theoretical frameworks alongside deep regional expertise, examining global media's political, social, and cultural dimensions within these contexts and their diasporic communities. We champion interdisciplinary research with a non-Western perspective, fostering decolonial approaches to understanding communication's interplay with politics and culture from local viewpoints. This orientation shapes both our alumni's work and current students' research. With our interdisciplinary emphasis, we leverage SOAS's broad academic resources, encouraging students to collaborate across departments for enriched learning. Our PhD program attracts scholars focused on in-depth media analysis in Asian and African contexts, as well as those integrating media studies with disciplines spanning humanities (language, culture) to social sciences (politics, law, international relations). We view research students as vital contributors to our academic standing and actively support their participation in seminars and international conferences, with many publishing in scholarly journals.
