Become part of our dynamic community of dedicated researchers in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. Our department is globally recognized for pioneering research in design theory, history, and practical applications for readability. We guide research projects spanning printing history and techniques (from lithography to stenciling), color printing and ephemera, as well as typeface design including cross-media typography, non-Latin scripts (such as Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, and South/Southeast Asian), and how composition methods shape typeforms. In graphic and book design, we explore typography's role in politics, government communications, design pedagogy, and typographic art practices. Our flexible PhD program accommodates your schedule, offering full-time (3 years) or part-time (4-6 years) options, either on-campus or remotely. Some students collaborate on interdisciplinary initiatives or external partnerships, working with both university and industry supervisors.
