The two-year MA in South Asian Studies with Intensive Language (or four-year part-time option) caters to students pursuing both academic and professional interests in South Asia.
This unique program offers unparalleled opportunities for in-depth exploration of one of the world's most culturally rich and significant regions, combining intensive training in a South Asian language (Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, or Sanskrit) with interdisciplinary coursework.
No prior knowledge of a South Asian language is required, as the program focuses on beginner-level instruction. Applicants with intermediate or advanced language skills should consult the program coordinator before applying, as language proficiency assessments may be conducted.
The curriculum features a summer intensive language component, currently available only in India (note: SOAS cannot assist with Indian visa applications). Participants are responsible for all travel expenses to India and living costs during their stay.
Our diverse student body includes recent graduates who developed an interest in South Asia during their studies or travels, individuals exploring personal connections to the region, and experienced professionals. Many mature students enroll to prepare for regional employment or to contextualize their firsthand experience in South Asia within an academic framework.
