The MA in Japanese Studies at SOAS stands as Europe's most extensive program of its kind.
You can select courses spanning Japan's historical timeline from pre-modern times to contemporary periods, encompassing both social/political sciences and humanities. This program attracts students from diverse nations with varied educational experiences.
Some participants have prior academic or living experience in Japan seeking deeper insights, while others aim to specialize their existing knowledge on the region. Additionally, students from Japan and neighboring East Asian countries join to examine their homeland through different cultural and scholarly lenses. Japanese language proficiency isn't mandatory, though language courses remain popular electives.
SOAS houses its dedicated Japan Research Center and collaborates with the University of East Anglia on the Sainsbury Institute for Japanese Arts and Culture. Students may participate in regular center seminars featuring global scholars presenting cutting-edge research across various Japan-related disciplines.
