The Spanish program belongs to the Modern Languages research cluster, offering a stimulating setting for both specialized and cross-disciplinary academic work. Recognized as a leading hub for studying European and global languages, literatures, histories, linguistics, visual cultures, and cultural identities, the cluster operates with an innovative research philosophy. Spanish research spans diverse eras, topics, and regions, encompassing early modern Spanish literature and culture, colonial Latin America, post-colonial film, enlightenment and post-enlightenment studies, contemporary Latin American research, and visual arts. Our work operates within a conceptual framework that blends conventional and emerging research areas. The department actively fosters interdisciplinary approaches, with faculty participating in multiple cross-disciplinary research initiatives and discussion groups. The PhD program encourages collaborative, cross-regional approaches in graduate education and mentorship.
