The Psychology and Forensic Sciences Division at Abertay plays a significant role in facilitating research degrees, including collaborative programs with NHS partners, regional education authorities, Police Scotland, and various industry sectors including digital technology.
As part of the Scottish Graduate School for Social Sciences, Abertay's psychology researchers engage in interdisciplinary work with other academic departments. Specializations include psychophysics and vision science, numerical cognition, language acquisition and processing, comparative psychology, forensic psychology, social cognition, cognitive neuroscience, and movement perception studies.
The psychology research facilities at Abertay feature nine dedicated faculty members, specialized laboratories, and experimental workspaces. These include high-performance computing systems running specialized software (E-prime, Superlab, N-Vivo, Paradigm, SPSS, Observer XT), along with advanced equipment such as an anechoic chamber, eye-tracking systems (SMI 3.0 Eye View, SMI Eye View X HED), physiological monitoring devices (GSR, EEG, tCDS, BioHarness Telemetry System), and surveillance technology. Researchers additionally benefit from cross-departmental access to virtual reality facilities and other digital resources.
MPhil typically requires 2 years of full-time study
Our research programs equip graduates for academic careers, research positions, and various professional opportunities beyond higher education.
