The PhD (Doctorate) program typically spans three years, culminating in a thesis limited to 80,000 words and an oral defense. As one of the earliest institutions to teach English literature globally, St Andrews maintains its reputation among the UK's top universities. The Modern and Contemporary research group explores literary and cultural works from the late 19th to early 21st centuries. Their diverse expertise spans from fin de siècle movements to modern poetry, with specialized focus on Modernism (including T.S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf), gender studies, crime fiction, critical theory, contemporary verse, British/American drama, Scottish literature, speculative fiction, war narratives, 1940s literature, British film, and music studies.
