Our graduate research programs cater to both critical and creative practice approaches. These programs are ideal for students seeking to explore historical or theoretical aspects of film, media, and screen cultures, or those pursuing doctoral studies through creative research methods. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary projects, especially collaborations with other disciplines within the School of Arts, English, and Languages.
PhD in Film and Visual Studies (Critical Practice): This pathway enables students to pursue innovative research in our specialized fields, including: animation studies, British film and television, media regulation, documentary filmmaking, sound in cinema, emerging screen technologies, political cinema, media industries, and global film studies.
Whether your interest lies in investigating historical or theoretical dimensions of film and audiovisual culture, or in practice-based research, we offer two distinct options: a Creative Practice pathway focusing on Documentary Film, Conflict Transformation, New Media, and Experimental Arts; and a Film and Visual Studies pathway covering cinema history, sound studies, global film comparisons, documentary theory, and Irish audiovisual culture.
